Karl's Community Hosted Music Circle/Pizza Party/Carol&Dale Concert

  • Victorian Station 36 North Mallory Street Hampton, VA, 23663 United States (map)

This month the theme is Gratitude.

We have some fun planned! Our own Italian Chef, Valentina Sorbera will be firing up her pizza oven on site for freshly made pizzas - we will have a concert set with our own treasured recent Nashville transplants: Carol & Dale - and our monthly Music Circle gathering will follow, playing out the day.

What we need from you:
Tell us if you're coming so we know how much pizza to bring!
No need to bring dishes for a pot luck this time, unless you'd like to bring a dessert. We will put up a tip jar if you'd like to help cover the pizza party costs.

Carol and Dale are husband and wife duo, Dale Whitehead and Carol Warren. They met and started performing together in Richmond, Va, and then married and moved to Nashville in 1994. They have a sound that is a unique blend of close harmonies, creative guitar work, and out of the ordinary lyrics. Both intricate and spiritual, they seek to find the groove in a sound that's been evolving for over 30 years.

Carol and Dale wear many hats. They both have continued their work in the piano field- Carol as a teacher, Dale as a technician- that originally brought them together. Upon moving to Nashville, they worked in the music industry, lent their talents to other artists, and continued to play as a duo. In 1997 they "bought the farm" and started a new chapter with blackberries and music. All of their experiences, including the flood of 2010 which wiped them out, and The Blackberry Jam Music Festival which their farm hosted for 20 years, are fodder for songwriting. Each song paints a picture and tells a story, whether with words or in the masterful instrumentals. In 2024 they moved back to Virginia, starting a new chapter for music.

Dale's guitar work has been influenced by many styles from folk to bluegrass to jazz, and by his years in bands, both the bar bands of his youth and more recently his time touring with Clint Black. Carol is a writer and a spiritual leader, and uses those insights to inform her lyrics. The songs begin there, but even more important is the collaboration itself- lyrics, music and arrangements are all carefully crafted by Carol and Dale together, and are integral to their sound.

Their first ep Read the Signs (2005) was a collection of demos, including the hit "Hey Shy Paula." The first full length album was Legacy( 2011) and features artwork by their daughter Anna. The most recent album is called Be Here Now (2017) and is currently available on all platforms. The 2020 single More Than a Village is also available as a video. When the pandemic cancelled all live music in March 2020, local singer/songwriter Karl Werne took his regular open mic on-line. Over the course of three years, "Karl's Community" has grown to a Facebook group with over 3000 members. On the 4th Sunday of every month, Big Pink Music will host an in-person unplugged Music Circle and Pot Luck for Karl's Community (All are Welcome!) using the intimate in-the-round setting. This event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
The room is ours for the day.
Bring your voices, bring your instruments, bring the family, bring a dish to share.
